Fire Dept Coffee Review and Coffee of the Month Club

Last week, I received an email from Fire Department Coffee asking if I’d provide feedback on their coffee and let others know about their Coffee of the Month Club. I was happy to do so because 1) I LOVE coffee and 2) I’ve always been a huge supporter of first responders.

Before we go any further, the FTC requires me to let you know that I received two bags of coffee at no charge. Here’s my official Disclosure Policy

Fire Dept. Coffee is a Veteran-owned company based in Rockford, IL. It's run by active and retired firefighters, including their operations officer and chief coffee roaster.

They offer a wide range of java juice including light, medium, and dark roast, espresso, extra caffeinated, and decaffeinated. You can purchase ground coffee, whole beans, or pods.

They also offer a wholesale program with special pricing and free shipping for firefighters, first responders, and military, or those who want to sell the brand in their retail or online stores.

Before I share my experience with their coffee, let me share a few of my firefighter stories.

When my daughter was a little over a year old, the latch on her high chair broke and I could not get her out. I tried everything I could think of, but nothing worked. I was a single mom, had very few tools, and no one was nearby to help, so I called the Fire Department.

My poor child was practically hyperventilating because she was stuck. I was incredibly embarrassed but so happy to see those firefighters arrive. They brought her a stuffed animal and one of them helped distract her while they worked.

They tried to salvage the high chair but they had to dismantle it to free my toddler. They were incredibly gracious about it and told me I was wise to call for help. The next day, I baked cookies and dropped them off at the station and they gave her a coloring book and crayons.

Fast forward 6-7 years and the firefighters and first responders rescued my child again. This time she had fallen headfirst from the arched monkey bars at the school playground.

I arrived at the school as they were pulling in and tearfully watched as they carefully secured her neck, placed her on a backboard, and transported her to the hospital. It was frightening, but they calmed everyone involved.

Fortunately, she did not break anything, but she did sprain her neck. We baked more cookies and dropped them off at the station.

At the time of the accident, I was working as a chef at a health food store. We served a lot of coffee and it was at this job that I began to learn about coffee varietals, organic coffee, sustainability, free-trade, etc. I was constantly testing new coffees for our coffee bar and loved every minute of it!

The one thing I always looked forward to was the seasonal blends that were only available during the holidays. One of my favorites was the Christmas Blend Coffee,  which I haven’t had in years. I was super excited to see that Fire Dept Coffee offers this blend, so I will definitely be stocking up on that!

Another time the firefighters came to the rescue was in October 2012 when I hosted Team Logan Bake Sale in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record while raising funds for pediatric cancer research.

The New Smyrna Beach Fire Department stopped by in their pink truck and pink shirts for breast cancer awareness month and supported us by purchasing cookies. We had many photo ops with them and they spent a lot of time interacting with the kids and adults.

Then in February 2020, I hosted the Ormond Chili Cook-Off which was a sanctioned event with the International Chili Society. We held a Battle of the Badges competition where first responders participated for bragging rights. While our local police department received the most votes, the NY retired firefighters team took 3rd place.

As you can see, firefighters have always been there for my family and me and I am honored to help support them and their coffee business.

So let’s get on with the review!

I received the Original medium roast and Black Cherry Bourbon Infused, both in whole beans. I was impressed by the glistening oil on the beans -- sooo fresh!

The coffee is rich and robust. Its earthy flavor includes notes of bourbon (of course!), black cherries, and vanilla.

It’s a great blend to kick-off your morning and would be ideal as an after-dinner coffee served during the holidays. Sip on a hot cup of Black Cherry Bourbon coffee while enjoying that pumpkin or pecan pie!

Just FYI, this is a limited edition coffee, so if you’re interested you should probably order sooner than later.

The Original is smooth and silky. It’s a medium roast with no bitter aftertaste, even when prepared in my ancient coffee brewer.

It’s a great breakfast coffee because it doesn’t overwhelm the flavor of your favorite breakfast foods.

It’s also a great dessert coffee and pairs well with cookies, muffins, and banana walnut bread

The Coffee of the Month Club is pretty straightforward. Visit their website, subscribe to the club, and receive freshly roasted coffee from different coffee-growing regions and origins each month. As a subscriber, you’ll receive a 5% discount and free shipping and you get to explore coffees you’ve never tried before. Win-win!

Last, but not least, Fire Dept. Coffee offers a giving-back program through its non-profit foundation. Fire Dept. Coffee Foundation supports groups that help first responders who are injured on the job, mentally or physically, or who are facing serious health challenges.

Each month they donate 10% of net proceeds from coffee sales to support worthy organizations or individual heroes in need.

With the holidays just around the corner, consider purchasing coffee, coffee subscriptions, shirts, mugs, or other gear from Fire Dept. Coffee. They are always there for us, so let’s be there for them!

Last, but not least, if you're on Facebook, follow their page. They post some great videos that will make you more aware of fire prevention and put a smile on your face.

Thanks for the coffee firefighters! We are immensely enjoying your java and will be back for more!
