Celebrating the Final Launch of Endeavour Space Shuttle

My day began standing on the beach to watch the final launch of Endeavour Space Shuttle. I'm incredibly lucky to live at the beach and can walk across the street to watch the launches. It's one of the most exhilarating experiences and I'm sad the program is being discontinued.

Afterward, I published "Historic Final Launch of Endeavour Space Shuttle" for YCN, one of my favorite writing outlets. Watching the launch and writing about my personal experience took me on a walk down memory lane.

What came to mind was the different foods associated with astronauts. My first astronaut food memory is of Tang, the orange-flavored powder drink mix. I grew up watching the Tang: Drink of Choice Among Gemini Astronauts commercials. Does anyone remember this one...

Another memory was of astonaut ice cream. Believe it or not, you can actually buy the stuff online. Just head over to and you'll have direct access to ice cream developed specifically for NASA Space Missions.

Apparently, astronauts eat a lot of ice cream because they have a nice selection. You can choose amongst the original Astronaut Ice Cream, Alien Ice Cream, Dinosaur Fossilized Slime, Chocolate Chip, Polar Bear Cookies and Cream Ice Cream Sandwich, Mint Chocolate Chip, and Astronaut Ice Cream Sandwich. Best of all they are cheap at an average cost of $2.70 per serving. What a fun idea for a pool party or children's birthday party! also sells freeze dried fruit and nut items, candy, and complete dinners. I'm thinking a astronaut dinner party would be a hoot. Unfortunately, the only dinner entree sold at the website is Beef Stew, but if all your guests like beef stew it would be a fun party idea.

Today, astronauts eat pretty much anything they do on Earth. It's just packaged, prepared, and consumed a little differently. If you're curious about how food is prepared in the space shuttle check out NASA's website section about space food. The ingenuity is quite amazing!

I'll miss the space shuttle launches, but am so grateful I've had the opportunity to watch several over the years. The last one is scheduled for July 2011 and I plan on having the best astronaut themed party on the planet. Stay tuned for my party planner!
